be mine

“ Kalau album kali ini gagal, korang terpaksa disband,” terngiang-ngiang kata-kata itu di fikiran Infinite. Tak mungkin mereka akan membiarkan impian yang dibina bersama hancur begitu saja. “ Guys, we need to work harder. We can’t let this group disband,” ujar Sunggyu selaku leader. “ Hyung, you think we can do this?” tanya Sungyeol. Sunggyu memandang wajah membernya satu persatu. Masing-masing kelihatan begitu lemah.
Sungyeol hanya mendiamkan diri. Mana mungkin dia mampu melupakan itu. “ Hoya, kau ingat? Myungie? Jongie? Dongwoo? Woohyun? Korang ingat tak lagi semua itu? Tangisan yang telah kita tangiskan? Kesakitan yang kita rasakan? Kepenatan yang kita hadapi? Ingat? Janji kita pada parent kita? Ingat semua tu?” tanya Sunggyu. “ Fighting?”. Infinite tersenyum.
Kini, Infinite berlatih setiap hari tanpa henti. “ Wae, hyung?” Hoya agar pelik dengan tindakan Sunggyu. Belum pernah Sunggyu sanggup memberikan makanannya kepada orang lain kerana Hoya tahu Sunggyu mesti lapar. “ Sebab kau perlukan tenaga. Hyung tahu kau mesti sakit sebab dance break, so anggap jalar itu sebagai tanda terima kasih hyung kerana kau masih bertahan,” ujar Sunggyu. “ But you need to eat too, hyung” balas Hoya. Dia memberi kembali ramen Sunggyu. “ Kita semakin rapat sekarang, kan?” tanya Woohyun. Infinite hanya tersenyum. “ Terima kasih kerana korang masih bertahan,” ujar Sunggyu.
“ Sejak bila sesi makan kita berubah jadi sesi  luahan persaan nie ?” pertanyaan Sungyeol membuat semua ketawa. “ Makan cepat sebelum kantoi dengan manager hyung. After this, go to sleep,” ujar Sunggyu. “ Arasso, hyung,” ujar Infinite serentak.
Akhirnya, Infinite comeback dengan lagu Be Mine. Melalui lagu itu, populariti Infinite semakin meningkat. Infinite mulai dikenali. “ Tempat pertama ialah ........new rookie....Be Mine INFINITE...chukahae,” umum MC Mnet Countdown. Infinite terkejut. “ Terima kasih kepada CEO woollim.........bla......bla.....our parents, we love you guys. Infinite members, saranghae and thanks a lot for your hard work. Lastly, our loved fans, Inspirit. Gumawo, saranghae,” ujar Sunggyu. “ Good job, guys! You guys are the best,” ujar Sunggyu ketika mereka bertujuh berpeluk. “ Hyung, you are the best too,”.
Paradise, Man In Love, Destiny dan lain-lain lagi.

"Congratulations, Infinite, on being 1st for weekly sales with their official album." This congratulating caption was placed recently on Mnet M Wide News’ ‘Infinite’s Sesame Player’, because Infinite topped the weekly charts at an album store. Although there were captions that followed it like, "They don’t believe it even after seeing it personally", "Confidence suddenly rising up high". On this day, Infinite did street performances to increase their popularity. Although you can say that their fandom’s support brought them to top an important album chart, there are more unknown people that aren’t in the fandom.

It’s an obvious happening. Infinite isn’t part of the ‘Big 3 Entertainments’, consisting of SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment. And they’re not girl groups either, who are closest to the public right now. There aren’t any members that gained popularity through variety shows either. Many male idol groups explain their group’s concept with ‘something-dol’, and enunciated each member’s specific character. When they seek for a distinct gender, age, and class group, with a definite concept, the chances for having a fandom created is higher and the fandom spends money on the idols’ albums, performances, and merchandise. Sometimes it’s a concept that causes the public to cringe and then there are enthusiastic fans who find that it matches their personal preference. However, Infinite are ‘group choreography-dols’. They do group dances without making the slightest of errors. And their videos at the practice room with exact choreography garners more interest than when they go on variety programs.

Idols Who Ran From 1990 And Came to 2011

The concept of dancing group choreography well is something that doesn’t make much of a difference in today’s generation. However, group choreography has a slightly different meaning to Infinite. Their album’s title songs, ‘Come Back Again’-‘BTD’-‘Be Mine’, reenact the group choreography from male idols of the 90’s. The members line up in perfect order and do the exact same motion as the others. When it’s their part, the members walk out into the middle while singing and at that time, the members go from left and right and do their group choreography. A confusing and highly perfected choreography that can only be done through excessive practice, the thing that allows each of the members to look as cool as they can. Infinite reenacts performances that seem like something H.O.T and Shinhwa would’ve shown during the latter half of the 90’s. Their songs also follow the material that male idol groups did back then. All 3 songs, ‘Come Back Again’, ‘BTD’, ‘Be Mine’, have choruses where they all sing together for a short, but fierce part. All 3 songs have a rap in the middle and show off their dance skills during a dance break in the latter half. Idols these days rarely follow the special materials of an idol group this thoroughly.
Reenacting the idols from the 90’s at 2011 could be pretty tacky. However, Yoo Heeyeol said that ‘Come Back Again’ is the best idol song of 2010. ‘Come Back Again’ has the special materials of a Korean male idol group, while having a disco/funky rhythm that seems like it would come out in the 1980’s. Following the speed of the disco/funky rhythm, they fiercely sing the ‘Come Back Again’ part together, which is the specialty of male idols. This is a ‘classic’ male idol song and a unique idol song. They still have the freshness and passion, which is the specialty of idol chorus singing, but the disco/funky rhythm make it less tackier.
The fandom amount for Infinite, who has combined the 1980’s disco/funky along with the 1990’s male idol group songs, is clear. People who were fans of idol groups in the 90’s, know the charms of Infinite’s group choreography. Also, the disco/funky sound is something they listened to on pop music programs when they were younger. ‘Come Back Again’ garnered the interest of fans who are influenced by the 1990’s idols and listeners who listened to music since the 80’s. Separating from the members’ personalities or the group’s concept, their songs and performances can appeal to people who still have feelings from ‘back then’.

The Small Potential That Infinite is Showing Now

'Be Mine' clearly shows this after seeing Infinite's personalities. Their rhythm has become more angled overall since their disco/funky days of 'Come back Again'. Their composed sounds and the way they sing the chorus make you think of the 1980's pop groups, A-ha and Joy. Their dance break has an intense electric guitar sound added to it just like H.O.T's songs and the latter half enunciates the male idol group's unique strong feel. The song's charm is that even with this combination, it still maintains the consistency of a 1980's pop song. Even their choreography adds on a new element onto the traditional male idol group's. Infinite's group choreography during 'Come Back Again' is when they stretch out their limbs and exactly match their starting and ending points. On the other hand, the main movement in 'Be Mine', is during the chorus where they look like they'll stop dancing but continue right on. Continuing movements and not cutting it off, causing the audience to become tense then relaxed, is the recent style. Infinite’s consistent ways for their songs and performances is slowly defining their identity of a ‘team’ and as their identity becomes more clear, they gain more popularity.Anyone who watches their performances, especially those who liked idols during the 1990’s, will give their attention to Infinite. Excessive effort is needed in order to exactly match group choreography. They work hard to the point where that effort shows and the fact that they’re idols who use those results as their concept is rather charming in today’s society.
It’s hard to think that the current Infinite was created by their entertainment’s strategy. If they were planning that, then they would’ve let people know the members’ characters or the group’s identity more effectively. It’s not like Infinite has amazing popularity either. The fact that they’re male idol groups who sold out 20,000 copies for the first edition of their official album means that they’ve only just entered the real competition. However, Infinite isn’t in the Big 3 Entertainments, they’re not girl groups, and they haven’t succeeded with variety programs. Their entertainment gave consistent songs and performances to the group and Infinite perfected their stage to the point where they could be recognized by the insides of idol fandoms. What Infinite has shown so far is their small potential. Good contents and consistent attempts. This is a potential that shows they can do something with just that.

INFINITE did fairly well in Korea.  They made second place in the category for most wins on music shows, winning once on 'Music Core,' twice on 'Inkigayo,' and twice on 'Music Bank.'  However, their popularity overseas is still quite lukewarm at this time.  Their MV for "Destiny," released sometime in July, got about 4.6 million views on YouTube.  This put them at just seventh place for that category.  However, they are sure to garner more fans as they started their six-month world tour in August.

Kini, Infinite semakin mengejar kejayaan mereka.

INFINITE CORNER
Kim Gura:Did you cry when you got first place on music shows?
Dongwoo:I cried alot
Dongwoo:[talking about their first win for Be Mine] I thought we wouldn't win, we were at a place where if this album didn't work out, we would disband. We poured out everything for this.
KGR:Then it was worth crying!
KGR:Then how about The Chaser?
Dongwoo:I didn't cry then.
KGR:Man In Love?
Dongwoo:It was a happy song, I didn't cry!
KGR:Destiny?
Dongwoo:I cried then!
KGR:Why?
Dongwoo:It was a comeback after a long break!
KGR:You have so many different reasons to cry.

Sungyeol: Hoya is, in a way, a greedy guy (laughs). Whether it’s a dance or a song, he takes whatever role he’s told to do and prepares with almost an excessive want and passion. His personality is really manly, and he properly works through everything he’s supposed to do like a sharp knife cutting through things. There’s no doubt that calling him outstanding wouldn’t be wrong.
Hoya: Dongwoo hyung has a crazy personality, but because of his personality being like that it’s hard not to smile when you’re around him. He’s a really interesting friend.
Dongwoo: Did you just call me a friend? It’s hyung, hyung! ((T/N: Korean word for friend (chingu) can refer to someone born the same year as you/on the same level. ))
Hoya: Ah, hyung. (bitter laugh)
Dongwoo: Sungjong is always energetic and his personality is very bright, and he takes care of his hyungs very well. He does things like if any of us forget something he’ll notice and bring it along. He’s a good magnae who is great at cheering up everyone’s moods and the whole atmosphere. He’s the best! Arigatou!
Sungjong: L, like you can see, is the visual of our group that’s almost like a statue. He has almost excessive good looks and many talents like playing the guitar, singing and acting. But in the end his face is definitely the coolest part of him (laughs). He’s my visual hyung.
L: The way I see it, Sunggyu hyung has it the hardest of all of us. For things like our promotions we have our own goals and ideals, and then there’s what everyone else wants us to do, and as the leader he has to work between those two things and keep the balance for us, and he does that really well. If we didn’t have a leader like him, I don’t think Infinite would have gotten to where we are today.
Sunggyu: Yes, this is Sunggyu who was just introduced as being a leader that keeps the balance well (laughs). Woohyun may act strong on the outside, but really… (the other members start laughing) He’s the most sensitive, fragile and in a way, the most immature of all of us. Even more than our magnae Sungjong… Also, because he has such a wide range of emotions his ability of expressing himself is extremely good. Even being a vocal like he is, he has such good expressiveness that I would like to learn from him. He also is very prideful, so he takes whatever he’s given and works his hardest and puts all of his effort into it to get it done so he doesn’t have to bother other people with it. He’s a very cool sort of younger brother.
Woohyun: This is the cool younger brother, Woohyun (laughs). Sungyeol is a very smart guy. He gives his all for everything, and he always uses aegyo on the rest of us, so of course we all love him. I think even for the hyungs he’s the sort of person you’d want to spoil and take care of. Lovely Sungyeol! Though that’s not how he used to be… (laughs)

—What is Infinite to you?
Sungyeol: It’s something that made me what I am and is very important to me. Because Infinite exists I’m here, and because I’m here Infinite exists…
Sungjong: It’s what I’m living for. It’s the reason I’m living right now. If it weren’t for Infinite I probably wouldn’t have ended up as a singer. I think that because Infinite exists I was able to come to be who I am now, so I’m really thankful.
Sunggyu: It was the ‘starting point’ of my music, and everything I have now. It’s something I’ll have to protect for the rest of my life, something that I can’t lose no matter what. We started this together, and the name Infinite refers to the seven of us together. That’s why, if even one of us is missing, we’re not really Infinite. We all need each other, and Infinite’s something that’s so important to all of us that the 7 of us being together is just like an undeniable fact. To the point that it feels like we can’t be apart no matter what.
Hoya: To me, it’s like a friend. These guys really are friends to me, anyway.
L: We’re a group that’s almost like a family. But in reality, we’ve been together more than even families are, so even if one person is missing it feels lonely, and when all of us are together I’m able to relax. That’s why I like how we live in a dorm. In the past there was a time when we got three days off in a row, and just not being able to see everyone over those three days made me want to see them again really badly. Thinking about what everyone might be doing at that time…
Woohyun: It’s my life. It gave me my dream now, in my 20s, which is the most important time of anyone’s life, and it’s the reason I’ve been able to sing. I truly think that it’s my life. I think that in the future, when I look back at my 20s, the fact that I was a part of Infinite will always be burned into my heart.
Dongwoo: It has a lot of meanings to me. It’s what gave birth to who I am now, and it’s a group that helped me find new sides of myself, and the group is who’s been my side all the time, through the good and the bad. And, more than anything else, Infinite is what has helped us seven meet and become so we’re almost siblings like we are now. Because Infinite was formed I’ve also been able to pay back my parents some for all the trouble they went through raising me. It’s also a group that I’ve been able to give good music to the fans through. I could go on about it forever, but it will end up really long so I’ll stop here (laughs).

SUNGGYU TALKS ABOUT HIS BELOVED MEMBERS
If there weren’t those guys…”

Hoya says he had to show me something and pressures me, while Woohyunnie monitors me carefully. Even on the music video filming set, they were all gathering and interfering in everything, but I think it stimulated me and I got excited too. They’re actually very playful friends, sometimes they tell the truth subtly while doing as if they were lying, but without the members, it feels empty. I want to ask to the people who ask me if I’m not tired of being with them after sticking together for such a long time, “Are you tired of your family?” Through the kids’ support, I, Kim Sunggyu am growing well. I don’t care if they poke fun at me because it sounds like a prepared comment. Because if there weren’t those guys, the present’s Kim Sunggyu wouldn’t be here. “ I don’t want to think Infinite without me. My main goal is to protect my members until the end, because they are my family. We want to be together until INFINITY”.

-Infinite seems to have had many complications before debuting.
“Everyone failed auditions of an amount that cannot be counted. Hoya dropped out of school at the age of 17 and created the dream of debuting as a singer, while being active as a dancer. When we met for the first time as a team we said, ‘We all must have failed all the auditions to become Infinite. It must have been destiny to meet like this’ and we practiced really hard to become the best group.”

Good job, INFINITE! Keep fighting!! Do your best! We, Inspirit, love you guys..

Woollim CEO Lee Jung Yeop's letter: Lee Jung Yeop's letter: "I wanna thank Infinite boys for never complaining about the tight schedule and limited money.. Even though they will be rich just like any other artists, they never work for money.. When we were preparing Come Back Again, we don't have enough money so we used my house to shoot. I believe the souvenirs the fans got on the concert wasn't enough. We didn't have enough money.....and we didn't cooperate with any sponsors. and you can see that Infinite didn't change their pants and only changed their clothes during the concert. I love you."

Selain 9 June 2010, Be Mine merupakan kenangan terindah untuk Infinite. Melalui lagu ini, Infinite miliki kejayaan seperti sekarang. ALWAYS BE MINE :)
